Using Ecamm with ProPresenter

How to add titles, lyrics and slides from ProPresenter to your Ecamm broadcast.

ProPresenter worship and presentation software can be used in conjunction with Ecamm to add titles, text and slides to your live broadcast.

There are two ways to add ProPresenter slides to your Ecamm broadcast: Syphon and NDI:

  • Use Syphon if Ecamm and ProPresenter are running on the same Mac.

  • Use NDI if Ecamm and ProPresenter are on different computers on the same network.

IMPORTANT: ProPresenter 6 and ProPresenter 7 are completely different, and have different set-up steps. Additionally, note that transparency (alpha channel) support for NDI output is only available in the Pro version of Ecamm.

Using Syphon with ProPresenter 6

If ProPresenter 6 and Ecamm are running on the same Mac, simply activate Syphon in Pro Presenter 6. To do this, go to the Display section of ProPresenter's preferences, and check Enable Syphon

Note: Due to an issue with ProPresenter 6, you may need to uncheck and re-check this Enable Syphon checkbox each time the ProPresenter 6 app is opened.

Using Syphon with Pro Presenter 7

If ProPresenter 7 and Ecamm are running on the same Mac, add a New Syphon Output in Pro Presenter's Screen Configuration window.  Details on how to add an Output can be found in the ProPresenter knowledge base

Once you've done this, you'll immediately see ProPresenter 7 show up as a camera choice in Ecamm's Camera menu and Camera Switcher.  Click the ProPresenter camera to add in the slide as an overlay.

Using NDI and Pro Presenter 6

If ProPresenter 6 and Ecamm are running on different computers on the same local area network, use NDI. To turn on NDI, you will need the SDI Output Module. Add the module in the Modules section of the preferences. You must either buy it or click Demo Modules to try it.

Once added, you'll see a new HD-SDI tab in the preferences. Pick this, and turn on NDI by picking NDI in the Device popup menu, and the desired video resolution in then Mode menu. Note that the Alpha Key feature is no longer available. ProPresenter users who need NDI with alpha should upgrade to ProPresenter 7. (See below.)

Using NDI and Pro Presenter 7

If ProPresenter 7 and Ecamm are running on different computers on the same local area network, use NDI. To use NDI in Pro Presenter 7, add a New NDI Output in Pro Presenter 7's Screen Configuration window.  Details on  how to add an Output can be found in the ProPresenter knowledge base

Once added, click the Alpha Key tab and choose to Enable:

Once you've done this, you'll immediately see ProPresenter 7 show up as a camera choice in Ecamm's Camera menu and Camera Switcher. Click the ProPresenter camera to add in the slide as an overlay.

Ensuring Your ProPresenter Slides Are Transparent

Check this article for details on ensuring that your ProPresenter presentation and slides have a transparent background. Transparency (alpha channel) functionality for NDI output requires the Pro version of Ecamm.

Using the ProPresenter Input As A Normal Camera

By default, Ecamm will treat a ProPresenter Syphon or NDI feed containing an alpha channel (transparency) as an overlay layer. This is useful to overlaying song lyrics, scripture, etc.

If you prefer that ProPresenter's Syphon or NDI feed is treated as a normal camera input, for example if you're using it to show slides, uncheck the Show NDI Titles Fullscreen checkbox in the Video section of Ecamm's preferences, or if using ProPresenter 7 and NDI, simply turn off the Alpha Key setting.

Troubleshooting Common NDI Issues in Ecamm

NDI (Network Device Interface) is a powerful tool for video production, but users may encounter issues when using it with Ecamm. Below are solutions to common problems:

Resolving Lag and Sputtering with NDI Overlays

  • Use the NDI Video Monitor tool to check if the issue persists outside of Ecamm.

  • Steps:

    1. Visit the NDI website.

    2. Navigate to the "NDI Video Monitor" section.

    3. Download and install the Mac version.

    4. Test the overlays in the NDI Video Monitor to isolate the issue.

  • If the problem exists in the monitor, it is likely a network or NDI setup issue, not Ecamm.

Fixing Transparency Issues

  • Ensure you are using the Pro version of Ecamm, as transparency (alpha channel) is not supported in the free version.

  • Verify NDI output and input settings in both ProPresenter and Ecamm.

  • Check Ecamm's documentation for compatibility details.

Enabling NDI Video Feed on macOS

  • Grant Local Network permission to Ecamm:

    1. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network.

    2. Enable the toggle for Ecamm.

    3. If you previously selected “Don’t Allow” on the macOS prompt, enabling it here restores access.

  • Ensure Ecamm is running from the Applications folder (not from a disk image or downloads location).

  • Relaunch Ecamm and test the NDI feed again.
