Dual Mode

Designing, streaming, and recording in horizontal and vertical video formats.

Updated yesterday

Using Dual Mode in Ecamm

Dual Mode lets you design, stream, and/or record horizontal and vertical video at the same time, with full creative control over each format.

Instead of creating separate recordings or editing clips later, Dual Mode allows you to build two intentional layouts in one session — one horizontal and one vertical.

This means you can simultaneously produce content for platforms like YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and more, without sacrificing design or quality.

One session. Two outputs. Fully designed for each format.

Turning On Dual Mode

To enable Dual Mode, you’ll need to make sure you’re using Ecamm v4.5 or newer. To double check what version you’re on, simply go to the Ecamm menu at the top and select Check for Updates.

Once you’re in the correct version of the app, you’ll find Dual Mode in the Options menu.

Options → Video Shape → Dual Mode (Horizontal & Vertical)

Once Dual Mode is enabled, Ecamm displays horizontal and vertical canvases side-by-side, allowing you to design each layout independently.

You can add different:

  • camera layouts

  • overlays

  • graphics

  • screen shares

  • scene compositions

to each canvas.

When you go live or record, Ecamm will stream and/or record both formats simultaneously.

Canvas Size Settings in Dual Mode

When Dual Mode is enabled, you'll see Horizontal Canvas Size and Vertical Canvas Size in the Options menu.

This allows you to control the resolution of each format independently.

  • From 540p up to 4K for the Horizontal Canvas Size

  • 720p or 1080p for the Vertical Canvas Size

These settings ensure each output is optimized for the platform it’s designed for, without needing to resize or crop later.

Designing Scenes in Dual Mode

Because each canvas is fully customizable, you can design layouts specifically for how viewers will experience them on each platform.

For example:

  • Horizontal may feature multiple guests or presentations.

  • Vertical may focus on a single speaker with larger graphics for mobile viewing.

Duplicate Overlays Between Canvases

If you want the same overlay in both canvases, you can duplicate it:

Method 1 — Right-click duplicate

  1. Right-click on an overlay.

  2. Select Duplicate to Vertical Canvas.

This copies the overlay to the other canvas.

Method 2 — Option-drag

Hold the Option key (⌥) and drag an overlay to the other canvas.

Automatically Synchronized Overlays

Some overlays will automatically stay synchronized when used on both canvases. This includes:

  • Movie overlays

  • Countdown timers and stopwatch overlays

  • Multi-page PDF overlays

  • Widgets

If these elements appear in both layouts, they will stay synced during your broadcast or recording.

Using Vertical Safe Zone

When designing scenes, it’s important to account for interface elements that may cover parts of the screen on certain platforms.

Ecamm includes Vertical Safe Zone feature in the Options menu to help with this.

The Vertical Safe Zone visually indicates areas that could be obscured by:

  • mobile UI elements

  • platform overlays

  • captions or comment bars

Using Safe Zone helps ensure that key elements like faces, logos, and text remain visible across platforms.

Streaming with Dual Mode

Dual Mode adds additional options to the live stream scheduling workflow.

When creating a new broadcast in Ecamm, you’ll see options to choose which canvas is streamed to each streaming destination:

  • Horizontal

  • Vertical

  • Horizontal & Vertical

Selecting Horizontal & Vertical will create two broadcasts on that platform, one for each shape. Only YouTube, Facebook, and LinkedIn support streaming both formats simultaneously.

Choosing Which Shape Goes to Each Destination

When scheduling or managing a broadcast, you'll see horizontal and vertical icons next to each destination.

These icons indicate the video shape being sent to that platform. Click these icons to change the aspect ratio assigned to that destination.

Editing the Shape for an Existing Scheduled Streams

If you've already scheduled a broadcast and need to change the format being sent to a destination:

  1. Locate the scheduled stream in the Upcoming window.

  2. Click the tiny button.

  3. The scheduling window will open.

  4. Use the icons next to each destination to change the video’s shape

Your updates will apply to the upcoming broadcast.

Dual Mode Recording

When recording with Dual Mode enabled, Ecamm will automatically create two video recordings, one horizontal, and one vertical.

Each recording reflects the layout you designed for that canvas. This allows you to immediately publish to different platforms without additional editing or cropping.

Choosing a Format for Outputs

Dual Mode also allows you to control which format is used for other outputs within Ecamm.

Virtual Camera with Dual Mode

When using Virtual Camera, you can choose whether the horizontal or vertical canvas is sent to the virtual camera output.

External Display Output

When using the Video Monitor feature, you can also choose whether the output uses the horizontal canvas, the vertical canvas, or the entire main window's output.
